Payload Delivery - Unmanned Air Vehicle
Concept, CAD/CAM, Prototype, Flight test, Production manufacture
The MSTS SPO had a requirement for a disposable UAV to be launched from existing infrastructure and be capable of carrying an 8 kg payload 20 n/miles in inclement weather and drop on target on request and reflect the 'disposable' aspect in its unit cost.
Composite Components was introduced to the project as a 'risk mitigator'. After receiving the mission parameters and contract we flew our prototype in three months and delivered seven airworthy aircraft in eleven months. We completed over 50 test flights within WA and in NSW. We had eclipsed the competitor’s time frame with a working solution validating our concept.
The program parameters were challenging as the launch infrastructure was existing and our new design had to fit within it. Our concept was to approach the issue simplistically and with a small team in order to keep costs down and the timeframe short. The aircraft had a simple laminate and weighed 2 kg empty and 5 kg with all batteries and avionics installed. The payload added another 8 kg to the system.
To our knowledge no other UAV on the market or in development can lift more than it weighs.
The SPO was very satisfied with our approach, delivery, and completion of this challenging design, build and test objective.
